As Deputy Director, he will be responsible for management and allocation of resources related to maritime border security.

Mr. Thompson joined the U.S. Navy in 1994 and was an Operations Specialist, Petty Officer Second Class. He served four years aboard an amphibious assault ship. He was also deployed twice, in 6-month intervals, to the Persian Gulf during Operation Desert Storm. He began his federal law enforcement career in January 1999 with the U.S. Border Patrol (USBP) assigned to Imperial Beach, California. In 2002, he was tasked to assist in creating the USBP Marine Interdiction Unit (MIU), where he served for nearly six years. As a member of the MIU, Mr. Thompson became the first U.S. Navy-certified Rescue Swimmer at USBP. He also served collaterally as a Helicopter Rope Suspension Techniques Master, Emergency Medical Technician, and advanced firearms instructor.

In 2007, Mr. Thompson entered on duty with Air and Marine Operations (AMO) in San Diego, California, as a Marine Interdiction Agent (MIA). During this time, he also held collateral duties as a Marine Instructor and Primary Firearms Instructor. After two-and-a-half years as an MIA, Mr. Thompson was promoted to Supervisory Marine Interdiction Agent (SMIA) and transferred to the National Marine Training Center (NMTC) in St. Augustine, Florida. While at NMTC, Mr. Thompson was instrumental in the instruction of over 350 MIAs and SMIAs nationwide. He also served collaterally as a Marine Standardization Evaluator, as well as a Senior Instructor for the Small Boat Interdiction Program, Firearms and Tactics, and Crew Resource Management.

In 2012, Mr. Thompson was promoted and transferred to AMO Headquarters in Washington, DC, where he served as the Southwest Region representative. Additionally, Mr. Thompson served as the National Marine Primary Firearms Instructor, and subject matter expert on maritime use of force tactics, policies, and procedures. Mr. Thompson was assigned to his current position as Deputy Director, Marine Operations at the San Diego Air and Marine Branch in July, 2014 and subsequently promoted to GS-15 in May, 2015.
